How Safe are Our Fishing Trips?

charter fishing with rod and reel

When you’re out on the waves of Galveston Bay, taking in the stunning sights and enjoying the leisurely act of fishing, the chances are that you won’t be spending too much time thinking about your safety. And why would you? You’re not there to worry about falling overboard and coming face to face with an underwater predator – but we are.
Sure, we might be one of the most reliable fishing charter services Galveston has to offer, but we understand that taking to the waves isn’t all fun and games.
Hundreds of people lose their lives on the ocean every year and at Get Bent Galveston, we consider it our priority to minimize the risks that you have to face. Now, you might be wondering how we do this. How on earth could we control the waves, ask the wind to behave, and ensure that sharks stay at a fishing-rods reach?

Our passion for your safety

You might not know this, but our boats are subjected to extensive checks and frequent maintenance. This helps us to make sure that all of the mechanical components are functional; whilst ensuring that the features are able to perform as efficiently as possible. We also make sure to fit our boats with state of the art safety gear and accessories, as well as ensuring that our communication devices can get in touch with emergency services if the situation dictates.

When boarding one of our vessels, you’ll probably also appreciate the fact that our captains are also trained in first aid, and can administer emergency care should you ever find yourself in need. They say that it’s always best to be prepared, and when taking one of our charters you can rest assured that we’ll go above and beyond the call of duty to keep you safe and sound while you’re with us.

And what will you be able to do?

You can relax and enjoy your fishing trip, of course! We know some of the best spots for trout, underwater predators, and a variety of fish species. We’ll get you to where you need to be, so that you can cast your rod, jiggle your bait, and wait for a bite. We’ve been out on the open waves for years, and in that time we’ve learned how to look after our clients as effectively as possible, so why spend time stressing yourself out about your well-being when we’ve already taken care of that?

Getting in touch

If you’d like to book a fishing charter with us, if you have a few questions that you’d like answered, or if you just fancy a chat with a friendly boat captain that knows most things about the ocean and its inhabitants – why not give us a call today?

Do you know how many people fall overboard on fishing charters every year? Too many, if you ask us! Not that we know the exact amount, because we’re responsible for literally zero of them. In fact if you’re here to experience some of the best (and safest) fishing charters Galveston has to offer, then why not take a look at our recent blog post to learn more about just how much of a priority we place on your safety and well-being?

Trout Fishing with the right gearThere aren’t many fish quite as exciting as sea trout. Oh, dolphins and whales you say? Well, they’re mammals, and therefore don’t count! sea trout can grow up to two feet, often put up a fight, and can feed a whole family – and that’s why so many of our clients book our fishing charter services here at Get Bent Galveston.

We know the bay area like the back of our hand. Actually, who really knows the back of their hand these days? Okay, we know the coast, the bay, and the ocean like one of our own children; in fact some parts even give less attitude! When fishing for sea trout we like to help our clients to prepare themselves as much as possible, and in this blog post you’ll find a host of useful information.

Preparing yourself for your next trout fishing trip

If you’ve never fished for trout before, then boy oh boy do we have some information for you. And even if you have, you might still learn a little something. For example, did you know that trout are notoriously violent when they are hooked? If you’re planning on using plastic or rubber worms and they get shredded; don’t worry too much, as the shredded parts can still be used!

trout don’t care what they eat, just that it’s an easy meal

Okay this next one might surprise you, but did you know that red tones can actually fool trout? If you’re fishing in shallow cover then a spinner bait with a red or purple head can trick a trout into thinking that it’s injured; and we all know how much this species of fish enjoys an easy meal. Red hooks can do the same, and this is why you’ll sometimes see them in tournament scenes.

The redder the better they say

Finally we have another gem for you – and we’re sure that you might even reconsider when’s best to actually book your fishing trip. Did you know that trout spend plenty of time near their fishing beds in the spring? During these times most mothers will only pop out of their hiding places for food – and that’s exactly what you’ll be offering (in a way).

Just remember to fish shallow at this time of the year, and keep your hooks sharp, to snare them first time

And that brings us to the end of our post. We hope that you enjoyed it and who knows; you might be feeling a little more prepared for your next trout fishing charter. If you’re passing through the Galveston area then why not get in touch with us? We’ll show you some of the best fishing spots in the area, and you might even land the catch of your life – so what have you got to lose?

On a side note, if you are in the Galveston area, stop by the bishops palace.  Its a historical landmark if you’re a fan of architecture.

Are Homemade Fishing Baits Worth Taking?

Fishing, Boy, Fishing Rod, Child, MaleHere at Get Bent Galveston, we make a point of offering some of the most enjoyable fishing charters in the region, but over the years we’ve found plenty of our clients asking us one simple question relating to their fishing adventures – and that’s if homemade baits are worth taking on their trip. This can be a bit of a tricky question, especially as different baits will contain varying ingredients, but we wouldn’t be fishermen if we didn’t at least try to offer an answer!

What makes a bait?

Well, pretty much anything that produces a scent underwater. You might be wondering why some fishermen use bread as bait – the truth is that although it can be pretty scentless to people, underwater it’s a different story. The yeast can be pretty appealing to a fish, as can the flour, and as most crumbs will soften and create a little bit of motion; they can be quite attractive visually as well.

That’s why live worms can offer such great results when used as bait – their scent and movement can often compel a fish into action, even if they aren’t overly hungry. When you’re on one of our Galveston fishing charters we’ll take care of your baiting-needs; we rely on some of the most effective on the market, but are they the be-all and end-all when it comes to a catch?

Recognising a good bait when you see one

Beyond the scent and sight, you will likely want your bait to last for a good while – especially if you’re deep sea fishing on one of our vessels. Some fish take a while to grow confidence, while others might already have come face to face with a hook – and in these cases, bait durability can be a priority.

For example, if you’re thinking about bringing your own homemade bait to attract fish then the chances are that you won’t want it to break apart as soon as it hits the water. That’s why we recommend using a binding agent of some sort – especially one that might offer its own appeal. Egg yolk for example can be useful, as it’s sticky enough to hold ingredients together while being pretty affordable.

Then there’s milk – but this isn’t anywhere near as reliable at lasting underwater. You could always use oil, especially the type from olives, which can be a little more appealing to fish – but as long as your bait holds together for long enough to attract a little attention, the results should start to speak for themselves.

So, what’s our final opinion?

If we’re honest – bait is bait. It’s designed to serve a purpose, and as long as it does that then is there really anything to worry about? We sometimes use homemade recipes, but other times we turn to products from suppliers that we trust. We’re clearly doing something right, because just look at the size of some of the fish that we’ve brought on board over the years! Don’t forget to stop by the Moody Mansion if you’re also on this side of town.

Getting The Basics Of Fishing Right

Get Bent Galveston Fishing Charters

There’s no question fishing is one of the most beloved past times of outdoor enthusiasts throughout the years. If you’re new to the hobby, read about three questions to ask yourself to start off on the right foot!

What Type of Fishing Are You Interested In?

Fly fishing, freshwater fishing, and saltwater fishing are all very different in many ways and require different equipment and expertise. Even within one type like freshwater you have crankbaits, jigs, bobber & bait setups, and more. There are many different techniques that different anglers used based on the water, fish species, and weather conditions. Try out several with friends who already fish and see which are the most fun for you.

What Kind of Fish Is Available Locally?

This is a big limitation in some places. You might love fishing for northern pike or walleye but if you live in Florida, you’re going to have to look at bass or saltwater fishing. Are there many trout streams near where you live? Are there big lakes and rivers or is it more of a lot of small ponds and creeks? You can’t fish for species that don’t exist in the area. While it’s never a bad thing to plan an out of state fishing trip for you and the family, to fish frequently you will have to go after something that is in your state and location.

What Fishing Equipment Do You Need?

Fishing equipment can get expensive very quickly, so especially on a budget a new angler needs to look at their options and budget very carefully. A couple good fishing rods, at least one or two good reels with fishing line, a handful of lures, and a net are often enough to get started. This list can change a bit depending on the exact type of fish you’re going after, but make sure to get the basics so you can start off right. There’s always time to accumulate more in the future!
